Communications and marketing strategies for education and technology

Here are some examples of some of the projects I've initiated across brand building, design, events, public relations and technical writing. My Linkedin profile is the best way to keep up with my MarComms activities.

Brand building

I build brands by establishing the mission, values and identity of an organisation. I help organisations stand out among the competition in crowded landscapes. I like to work with organisations with a mission to help people and change the world and to assist them in articulating their vision into something impactful that extends their reach.

"I had the pleasure of working with Rhiannon for the launch and brand-build of [a technology company], and her dedication and professionalism could not be faulted. Rhiannon brings strategic vision, a considered approach combined with a tenacity and focus on tactical delivery. She always fosters collaboration and positive change with those she works with – from employees, stakeholders as well as agency partners. Her skills in navigating complex challenges and her willingness to engage with diverse teams make her stand out."   Sian Gaskell  Managing Partner, Tyto PR

Optimised for precision 2020-2024

Product marketing in action.

  • I evolved this brand from a holding position to an integrated brand identity supported by a brand book, language guidance, CRM integration and Google analytics.
  • I chose a sans serif font where I could create a logo with a perfectly round O by choosing a round and publically available font (Lato) and expanding it horizontally by by 105% in the brand logo mark. I chose the supporting colours to create the "Mexican breakfast" palette.
  • I worked with designers for print and web who worked to my brief to create a series of supporting material.

The View from The Hill 2019-2020

The convenience of a takeaway

This 16 page brochure introduced The Hill, a grant-funded Local Enterprise Partnership supported digital innovation service embedded in the local NHS Trust.

Your client or customer may not be the person you meet but the person *they* meet. Your handout, newsletter, sales brochure or annual report is your first introduction to someone. Link your socials to increase a digital audience but print will never go away.

Design and production

I design websites, power point presentations, brochures and sales sheets, advertisements, flyers and event stands.

I work myself in Dreamweaver, InDesign, Photoshop and similar software.

I also have worked with designers to commission work, providing editing, critique and guidance. I organise large and specialist prints runs and installations of outdoor and event signage.

Creativity and consistency

Brochures for the Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment at Oxford Brookes University.

  • Examples from a suite of print material commissioned for a university faculty: newsletters and course brochures to be sent to alumni and given away at open days.
  • I managed a marketing team who gathered content from academic staff and produced these according to the Oxford Brookes brand guidelines, with the assistance of an external designer.
  • As a team we collected images of student work, took photographs of specific courses and made these academic departments feel vibrant and different while within a strong overarching brand.

Team effort

With the help of a team we can post more differentiated material from our social accounts

My team at the university were creative and independent in running their areas under my supervision. Campaigns were always discussed in team meetings and I outsourced some projects for design to give my team more experience in instructing a designer, while also training them in design software and event photography.

Project management

I enjoy balancing the demands of multiple projects. I received project management training as part of my NVQ in Management and have experience with software from Monday.com, ClickUp, ProjectManagement.com, Trello, Microsoft Project, SmartSheet and Wundalist.

Using project management tools, calendars and spreadsheets I have organized complex schedules of meetings, project delivery dates and data analysis. In this way I ensure that strategy informs operations, that projects are delivered on budget and to deadline and with clear reporting so that strategic decisions can be made with relevant and useful information.

Leads and prospects (CRM)

  • I have generated new prospects, categorised and weighted potential leads and engaged with active opportunities to ensure they understand the benefits of the product.
  • I have managed Hubspot and Salesforce: curating and messaging over leads, through newsletters, campaign outreach, event communications and other outreach activities. I built out a database with prospects for development through a sales funnel.
  • I've also used MailChimp, AdEstra, and other massmail software to deliver messaging to customers, clients and partners.

Event management

Running successful events requires planning, vision and great communications skills.

  • I handle the logistical chalenges of storage and shipping and establishing contingencies for a minimum viable product.
  • I deliver a professional event presence including introductions, b2b, b2c and demos. Booth designs, take-aways, branded promo items and audio visual assets contribute to a great booth rating.
  • I work with sales to invite customers, opportunities and prospects to our booth through targeted CRM campaigns.
  • Matching the style of the event can mean the dress is officially business casual but the presentation is always professional.

Professional and friendly conference presence

A professional presence allows you to greet your customers and clients with confident authority. Any question they ask can be answered with support from the demo material, AV presentations and hard copy handouts.

Virtual open days

Proposed, directed and project-managed the first Virtual Open Day (2014) for Oxford Brookes University including production of 129 pieces of video introductions to courses, departments and culture.

  • live-streamed panel discussions and interviews with senior staff and academic colleagues
  • 129 videos covering undergraduate and postgraduate degree and additional cultural pieces
  • a responsive livechat staffed by professional services colleagues from the international and admissions teams
  • a conversion rate of 13-35% across the programmes it covered
  • was adopted by the three other Faculties at Oxford Brookes
  • an innovative mailing campaign with a video postcard
